Tsüngremmong celebrations begin in Mokokchung

The celebration of harvest festival Tsüngremmong, one of the premier festivals of the Ao Nagas, in Ungma village, Imkong L Imchen called upon the community not to forget the ethos of their tradition

Mokokchung — Tsüngremmong, one of the premier festivals of the Ao Nagas, began with pomp and gaiety in different parts of Mokokchung district on Tuesday.

In Ungma village, the celebration of harvest festival was hosted by the Soyim Shisaluyimer Telongjem (SST) with Imkong L Imchen, advisor of Information and Public Relation and Soil & Water Conservation, as the special guest.

Addressing the gathering, Imchen called upon the community not to forget the ethos of their tradition during celebrations of festival, stating that the identity as a unique community lies in their customs and tradition.

“Cultural traits are not static, they evolve with time, but what cannot change is the ethos of the tradition,” Imchen said.

The advisor has urged to instill cultural values and educate the children when they are still young in order to carry forward the rich heritage.

He has described Ungma village as the harbinger of Ao history and holds a significant place in all historical concepts of Ao tribe. He further added that Ungma is a liberal village that upholds freedom of speech, which is exemplary to other villages. 

The festival also witnessed traditional dance performance from Ongpangkong Kaketshir Mungdang and Soyim Shisaluyimer Telongjem, traditional fusion song from Tenemsanger choir and season song from Kosasanger Putu Menden Ungma.

Young boys and girls, dressed in colourful traditional attire, enthralled the audience with their performances. The significance of Tsüngremmong celebration was said by Rarentemjen Jamir, tatar. Greetings on the occasion were delivered by president of Ongpangkong Kaketshir Mundang and welcome address was shared by president of SST.
