Dimapur, July 23 (EMN): Principal Secretary of Urban Development department and Municipal Affairs, I Himato Zhimomi, has urged upon the urban local bodies (ULB) to work towards zero waste policy, which according to him, is a possible dream ‘if one is determine to have healthier and cleaner environment despite the complications one faces.’

Zhimomi stated this during a workshop on “Transition to alternative use of single-use plastic in line with implementation of Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021” for all the urban local bodies in Nagaland, organised by the Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) at the Convention Centre in Kohima on July 22. He spoke on the menace of solid waste, which is increasing everyday thereby affecting the environment and causing climate change with the raising temperature, taking the example of Kohima, an update from NPCB stated.

In his welcome and keynote address, K Hukato Chishi, NPCB member secretary, highlighted on the role of NPCB as a statutory body. He stated on receiving directions from the MoEF&CC, CPCB or NGT, the same were notified to the district administrators and municipal councils to ensure whether they are following the directions in terms of wastes like plastics, solid wastes etc.

It stated that during technical sessions on different topics such as “Transition to alternatives to single-use plastics,” “Brief overview of plastic waste management (second amendment) rules, 2022,” “Plastic recycling and opportunities for effective utilisation of plastic wastes,” “Demonstration on CPCB monitoring module for compliance of SUP and SUP public grievance redressal APP,” “Rulings of NGT order on solid waste management” were covered by resource persons namely Aghali A Swu, environmental engineer; Sentinaro Angami, senior scientific assistant; Akangmeren Imchen, scientist B; and Yanathung Kithan, scientist B from Nagaland Pollution Control Board.

Pelenuo, who started an NGO called Zübzüb, shared her experience on how she started her movement in cleaning parts of Kohima and slowly started to clean the whole city of Kohima.
