Weavers conference-cum-ceremonial distribution programme held in Karbi Anglong

Diphu, Aug. 22 (EMN): Weavers conference-cum-ceremonial distribution programme by Handloom and Textiles Department in collaboration with Adult Education Department, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) was held at Joysing Doloi Auditorium in Diphu on Aug. 21.

The programme was held to inform weavers about Swa Nirvar Naari scheme for self-sustainability.

Chief Executive Member (CEM), KAAC, Tuliram Ronghang, said that a discussion is being held with the weavers of Karbi Anglong on various schemes which would benefit the weaver’s community. He said that the KAAC supports the Handloom & Textiles Department to help weavers with the production of traditional customs so that it can be promoted to the international level.

The CEM said, ‘the Handloom department is providing one-time financial assistance to weavers as support. Each Handloom Co-operative Society is given financial assistance of INR 20,000 including yarns, fly shuttle looms and accessories provided to them. While from the Adult Education Department each SHG is getting a one-time financial assistance of INR 10,000 and a sewing machine.’

Executive Member (EM), KAAC, Handloom & Textiles and Adult Education, Madhuram Lekthe said the weaver’s meet is being organised to help the local weavers to become self-dependent through the production of handloom products like traditional clothes and dresses.

The EM said that in West Karbi Anglong there are 15 registered handloom co-operative societies, 20 in Diphu and Howraghat LACs and 15 in Bokajan LAC while adding that these co-operative societies will be getting the financial assistance.

The government of Assam is trying to help the weavers develop by introducing a scheme like ‘Swa Nirvar Naari,’ where each weaver can avail the benefit, the EM said.

In the first session the Assistant Director, Handloom & Textiles, Tapash Kumar Das presented a powerpoint on the new flag scheme launched by the government of Assam, ‘Swa Nirvar Naari’ to make local weavers self-dependent. Under this scheme weavers have to get registered with the Handloom & Textiles department to avail of the benefit, he said.

Apart from financial assistance from both Handloom & Textiles Department and Adult Education Department, the registered SHGs and co-operative societies will also receive fly shuttle looms, yarns, and sewing machines, Das said.

More than 1500 weavers attended the day’s programme.
