DIMAPUR — Former NPCC president and former minister K Therie has said that, while the 33% women’s reservation is linked to census and delimitation, Congress, if given the opportunity, will amend the act and implement it.

In a press statement, Therie expressed hope that by 2028, the state assembly would have at least 20 women members, ULBs would have at least four to five members, and there would be at least a hundred women legislators, adding that women’s participation in the assemblies would improve decency in governance.

Noting that there are two distinct ideological parties in India and that other regional parties exist by endorsing one of the ideologies, he declared that it is time for women to make their own decisions and join political parties.

He claimed that the ideology of the Congress is a secular, socialist democratic republic and that the BJP’s idea is Hindutva, which means Hindu Rashtra (Hindu kingdom).

He stated that Congress believes in unity in diversity, freedom of religion, and freedom of expression and that women have more or less 50% of the vote share, which can change the political equation.

“At the end of all politics, it all boils down to the vote. There is nothing more important or powerful than the vote. Only the vote is recognised. All wisdom and narratives have no meaning without a vote,” he said.

He noted that given the opportunity, ‘Congress will adopt technologies of a clean democratic election’.

He added that men could not take away the 33% reservation and that women of all ages need to understand this. They must therefore fill it, he said and encouraged them to join political parties, especially retired employees.
