DIMAPUR — District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) Kohima organised a capacity building workshop on the theme ‘Adolescents and youth’ on Thursday at Urban Primary Health Centre, Porterlane, Kohima.
According to a press release, common mental health issues, pathways to care, and promotional and preventive measures to address common mental health issues were discussed during the session.
Veronica Nriame, psychiatric social worker, District Mental Health Programme (DMHP), Kohima, was one of the event’s resource persons, and she spoke about mental health and common mental health issues that adolescents and youth face.
She said that anxiety, depression, gaming, suicidal thoughts, and the use of alcohol and substances are common health issues and talked about suicide awareness and how health workers can help those who are vulnerable and prevent suicides.
She urged the participants to be ambassadors for promoting and protecting the mental health of themselves and others. She opined that health workers must provide referral services when they are needed.
Kethozenuo Mere, a psychiatric nurse at DMHP Kohima, discussed effective measures to promote mental health. She advised the participants that it is critical to regulate emotions, channel them in a healthy manner, and process a range of emotions.
She emphasised the importance of core life skills, particularly for adolescents, and discussed ongoing projects such as Tele MANAS, Project Rest, etc.
The session was attended by 20 participants, including medical officer Dr. Aomeren, nurses, and ASHA workers.
